Bank — Business Case

The case for a bank or financier adopting verifiable trade documents and identity.

A bank’s job is assessing the authenticity and risk of documents and parties — exactly what verifiable credentials automate. They cut due-diligence cost and the fraud, information-asymmetry, and collateral barriers that drive the trade-finance gap, broadening access for SMEs.

Where the value comes from

  • Trade & working-capital finance ④ (primary) — lower asymmetry and fraud risk let the bank finance more trade, for more (and smaller) exporters (Trade Finance).
  • Compliance & risk ⑦ (primary) — automated KYC, fraud detection, and double-financing prevention via provable control of transferable records.
  • Operational efficiency ⑥ (secondary) — automated document checking in place of manual examination.

What it costs

A one-time verifier integration into onboarding and trade-finance systems. Decentralised model — no platform membership or per-transaction fees; the bank folds verification into systems it already runs.

Payback

Due-diligence and fraud-loss savings, plus newly financeable business, against a modest integration cost — typically a short payback.

Generate your business case

Light — attach your annual report and/or trade-finance portfolio data, then paste the prompt below into a browsing-capable frontier model (ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini). It fetches the UNVTD method and returns a 4–8 page draft; ask it to convert to Word.

Full — for exact, data-grounded figures, clone the repository and run Claude over the per-country data. See the generation guide.

Copy the Light prompt

You are preparing a first-draft UNVTD business case for the bank / financier whose document(s) are attached. The goal: adopting verifiable trade documents and identity to cut due-diligence cost and fraud, prevent double-financing, and finance more trade — including for SMEs. INPUTS 1. Attached document(s) — extract trade-finance volume, application/rejection rates, due-diligence (KYC) cost, and any fraud-loss indication. Where a figure is absent, use the benchmark defaults on the methodology page and say so. No document? Paste your organisation's website — WEBSITE: __________ (e.g. https://examplebank.com). The model looks up your sector, country of operation, and scale (assets / trade-finance book), then produces an illustrative estimate from your country's context (Evidence section: https://unvtd.unece.org/evidence/) and typical assumptions for a bank of your size — clearly flagged as indicative. If neither a document nor a website is given, ask the user. 2. Fetch these UNVTD pages (and follow their links): - Method: https://unvtd.unece.org/business-cases/assessment-methodology/ - This stakeholder's case: https://unvtd.unece.org/business-cases/bank/ - Scenario: https://unvtd.unece.org/use-cases/trade-finance/ METHOD Apply the method from the Assessment Methodology page to the bank's levers — trade & working-capital finance and compliance & risk (primary), with secondary operational efficiency (automated document checking). For finance, use the data-derived 58% UNVTD/GRID-addressable share (digital ID 27% + verifiable documents 9% + asset collateral 22%); report finance enabled and its economic benefit separately. Double-financing prevention relies on provable control of transferable records. Cost is a one-time verifier integration into onboarding and trade-finance systems. RULES - Be conservative — lower end of every range unless the attached document justifies higher. - Show your working; every monetary figure is a range; separate finance enabled from economic benefit. - Confidence (High/Medium/Low) per benefit; conservative / base / optimistic scenarios. - Assess ecosystem readiness — national register / GRID for KYC, the ETR control protocol for transferable records, correspondent-bank reach. - Plain markdown; end by telling the reader to convert to Word. OUTPUT — a 4–8 page business case: 1) Executive summary; 2) Bank profile; 3) Why verifiable trade matters to the bank; 4) Estimated benefits (finance, compliance & risk, with confidence + scenarios); 5) Estimated cost (verifier integration); 6) Payback, NPV, ROI; 7) Implementation roadmap (Discovery → Alpha → Beta → Live); 8) Assumptions, methodology & references; 9) Next steps. If you cannot browse the web, use Full mode instead (clone the repository; the full method and per-country data are local).
